We started with the opening prayer in focusing on light and the hearts on fire, and the word because of the topics in the videos. I tried to come up with a great prayer for tonight. I truly hope you take it with you in your own prayer life. My hope is to help you by walking with you in your prayer life, by giving you resources. I truly want to walk the journey of faith with you.
The key topics from the two videos are, praying with the heart: bringing the mind down into the heart, praying “in the Spirit”, the Breath of the Lord, components of contemplative practice: breath, posture, a word, the Philokalia, praying with a word: beyond thoughts, “O God, come to my assistance”, the Jesus Prayer, and being in the present; being in the presence.
What stood out to me in the first video was the mind into the heart, deepening our prayer by praying from the heart, and slowing down our own breathe by exhaling more than inhale. He gave us an example, exhale 8 seconds, then inhale for 4 seconds. He spoke on three important pieces for prayer, one was breathe, two is posture, and the Word. Breathe is merely meaning focusing on your surroundings
sit in silence, and breathe in and out get rid of worries and concerns and just be. Posture is very important because of the negative postures of prayering, for example if you are lying in bed then well it will not be fruitful but if you kneel beside your bed you will pray better and gain more fruit from it. Try it even for 5 to 10 minutes a day in prayer life, and see the gains! The word is meant by what you might be reading, and or speaking in your prayer is so very important. Do you read the Bible, do you have a devotional, or do you simply talk to God; all are no better than another, whatever works for you but in what you do. Remember God.
What stood out to me in the second video was how he spoke on having a Mantra (I think – if you do not have one by now we need one, we heard from Father Julio and Father Donald about Mantras), having a relaxed being, the mind does what it does try to move beyond the thinking and the way to do that is with a mantra, psalm 70, and using the liturgy of the hours to prayer. Also, spoke about the “Cloud of the Unknowing,” and John Main’s marantha.
I think our assignment tonight is still carry out being in silence at least five minutes a day, and fine tuning and or coming up with our
